About Us

Choithram College of Nursing is a unit of Choithram Charitable Trust. The trust was founded By Sh. Thakur DasjiPagarani in the fond memory of his father Late Sh. ChoithramVishandasjiPagarani in the year 1970. Under this trust two other institutions are: Choithram Dispensary and Choithram Hospital & Research Centre. Choithram Dispensary was started in 1972 where patients are given all the health care services including investigations consultation and medicines totally free. Choithram Hospital which is now a super-speciality tertiary care hospital was initiated in 1979. The aim of starting health care services in Indore was to provide world class medical facilities at affordable cost to the people of Madhya Pradesh, who earlier had to go to Mumbai and Chennai for such services. The hospital started progressing rapidly with the addition of new specialities and super- specialities. As a result, bed strength increased from hundred beds in 1979 to 350 beds. And being a super-specialty hospital need was felt to prepare a cadre of nurses with high standards of education and clinical training for providing quality nursing care services. The aim was to start B.Sc. nursing but due to some bureaucratic hurdles we had to be satisfied with getting permission to start a General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM Diploma) program. We started GNM program with 20 students in 1982. The first batch completed its course in 1985 and to our great pride and satisfaction all passed in first class and one of them, Annamma Samuel got top position in the State Council Exams. This tradition of topping in the state exams was maintained for many years. Till 1999, when last batch of GNM passed out, we had trained 396 diploma nurses, who after working in Choithram Hospital for a number of years have been working in reputed hospitals of India and many have gone abroad. We upgraded our nursing program by staring B.Sc. nursing (4 years degree) in 1996, affiliated to Devi AhilyaVishavVidyalya (DAVV), Indore. Diploma program was stopped in phased manner. Since then the college has been the edifice of success, adding new programs and projects. The main aim of the college has been focused on preparing excellent clinical nurses, world class nurse academicians and nurse researchers. Master’s program in nursing was started in 2005 in five specialties (Medical- Surgical Nursing, Child-Health Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing and Obstetric & Gynaecological Nursing) with five seats in each specialty. We did start PC B.Sc. Nursing in 2009 but stopped it in 2015. Choithram College of Nursing, SSR Dec. 2016 4 College got recognised as study centre by DAVV for Doctoral program in nursing in 2014. It was a proud moment for us and the University to be the first in Central India to initiate PhD in nursing. Our strategic priorities are aptly reflected in our emblem, which are 1) Education, Service and Research. Education: We aim at preparing nurses with sound theoretical knowledge base and effective skills and attitude to assume responsibility as professional nurses for providing comprehensive care to sick and well. 2) Service: Graduate nurses are prepared well to deliver excellent nursing care services to populations not only in hospitals but at all types of health care settings and in communities; shouldering their responsibility in contributing effectively in preventive, promotive, curative and restorative aspects of health care. 3) Research: college faculty is committed to provide research-sensitive environment that validates existing knowledge and generates new knowledge in nursing and health care arena. Conducting leading edge research focussed on the needs of the patients and the people is the main area at “PhD cell” of the college. Although, the essence of higher education is to build on the foundation of existing knowledge base, but in a professional course of education, an institution has the challenge to make a new foundation not only of knowledge but more importantly of developing professional attitude of commitment in the young minds for service. Surely, it needs dedicated efforts. All through its 34 years of shining existence, Choithram College of Nursing has proved its mantle and the institution is being looked at as a beacon of hope and guidance by the nursing fraternity in this part of the country.
