COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING

The Department focuses on preparing students to address public health issues and promote wellness in diverse communities by promoting and improving the health and well-being of individual, family and groups in community through various nursing practices and public health strategies. Community Health Nursing Department works in collaboration with Local Health department (CMHO) & ICDS where students are posted at different health settings like Health & Wellness Centers, Primary Health Centers, Community Health Center, Anganwadies & Dist hospitals to gain community experience.

Mission: To educate and train future community health nurses who are skilled in promoting health, preventing disease, and improving the quality of life in diverse community settings.

OBJECTIVES

  • Develop a strong foundation by equipping students with knowledge of community health nursing principles, theories, and practices.
  • Enhance Clinical skills and competencies by provide hands-on training and practical experience in community health settings, including home visits, community clinics, and public health programs.
  • Promote effective communication and Interpersonal skills by developing students' abilities to communicate effectively with diverse populations, including patients, families, and community stakeholders.
  • Fostering Critical thinking and problem solving abilities by encourage students to apply critical thinking and evidence-based practice to solve complex health problems and make informed decisions.
  • Prepare students to design, implement, and evaluate public health interventions.
  • Cultivate Leadership & Advocacy skills by prepare students to take on leadership roles and advocate for public health policies and practices.
  • Integrate Knowledge of Public Health and Epidemiology by ensuring students understands public health concepts, epidemiological methods, and their application in community health settings.
  • Enhance Cultural Competency and Sensitivity: Prepare students to work effectively with diverse populations, respecting cultural, socioeconomic, and ethnic differences. In order to provide culturally competent care and tailor interventions to meet the unique needs of various individual, family and groups.
  • Promotion of health by giving Health Education by teaching students to develop and implement health education programs that promote wellness and prevent disease.
  • Prepare for Collaboration and Teamwork by developing students’ ability to work with other healthcare professionals and community organizations collaboratively.
  • Emphasize Ethical and Professional Practice by instilling a strong sense of professional ethics, responsibility, and accountability in community health nursing practice.
  • Foster a commitment to continuous learning and staying current with advancements in community health nursing through motivating students to pursue further education, certification, and professional development opportunities throughout their careers.
  • Prepare students to respond to emerging public health issues and integrate innovative solutions into community health practice.

CORE FUNCTIONS

  • Community Assessment:

  • Conduct assessments to identify community health needs and resources.

  • Health Education:

  • Educate individuals and communities about health issues, preventive measures, and healthy lifestyle choices.

  • Disease Prevention and Control:

  • Implement programs to prevent the spread of diseases and manage outbreaks.

  • Health Promotion:

  • Develop initiatives to encourage healthy behaviors and improve overall well-being.

  • Policy Advocacy:

  • Advocate for policies and practices that support public health and nursing practice./p>

KEY PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES

  • Home Visits:

  • Plan and provide nursing care and health education in patients' homes.

  • Community Health Clinics:

  • Provide health care services at govt. health clinics and centers that provide a range of health services to underserved populations.

  • School Health Programs:

  • Performs physical examination, vision testing, calculate BMI of students, screen the students for deviation of health and refer them.

  • Mental Health Services:

  • Address mental health issues through counseling, health education, role plays and referrals.

SERVICES PROVIDED:

  • Health Screenings:

  • Performs screenings for chronic diseases, infections, and other health conditions.

  • Immunization Programs:

  • Participate and assist in providing vaccines to all age groups and promote immunization to prevent infectious diseases./p>
  • Chronic Disease Management:

  • Support individuals with chronic conditions through education and care coordination with health care providers in health centers.

  • Maternal and Child Health:

  • Provide care and support for mothers and children, including prenatal and postnatal care.

  • Adolescent Health:

  • Examine and educate adolescents groups for reproductive health and hygiene.

  • Geriatric Care:

  • Examine and educate elderly and their family members to promote healthy living and prevention of diseases.

  • Participating in National Health Programs:

  • Participate in National Health Programs and contribute towards national health goals.


    The Department of Community Health Nursing plays a crucial role in building healthier communities by integrating clinical care with public health principles.
