OBSTETRIC AND GYNAECOLOGICAL NURSING DEPARTMENT

The Obstetric and gynaecological Nursing Department at Choithram College of Nursing plays a pivotal role in training nursing students to provide comprehensive care to women throughout their reproductive years and beyond. This department is dedicated to imparting knowledge and skills related to women's health, including pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum care, and gynaecological conditions. Through a blend of theoretical learning, clinical practice, and research, the department aims to prepare students to excel in various healthcare settings, addressing the unique needs of women with compassion and expertise.

OBJECTIVES

  • To Provide Comprehensive Education: Equip students with in-depth knowledge of obstetrics and gynaecology, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, and nursing care related to women’s health.
  • To Develop Clinical Competence, enhance students' clinical skills in managing normal and high-risk pregnancies, labor, delivery, postpartum care, and gynaecological conditions.
  • To Promote Research and Innovation: Encourage research in women's health issues, aiming to improve nursing practices and contribute to evidence-based care.
  • To Foster Patient-Centered Care: Instil a deep understanding of patient-centered care, focusing on the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of women and their families.
  • To Enhance Professionalism: Develop professional values, including ethical practice, communication, teamwork, and leadership skills, necessary for effective nursing practice in obstetrics and genecology.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES

  • Clinical Training:

  • Students undergo rigorous clinical training in affiliated hospitals, where they gain hands-on experience in labor rooms, antenatal and postnatal wards, and gynaecological units. This includes managing normal deliveries, assisting in caesarean sections, and caring for women with gynaecological disorders.

  • Workshops and Seminars:

  • The department organizes workshops and seminars on current trends in obstetrics and gynaecology, such as high-risk pregnancies, neonatal care, family planning, and reproductive health. These activities enhance students' knowledge and keep them updated with the latest developments in the field.

  • Community Outreach Programs:

  • Students participate in community health initiatives, conducting awareness programs on maternal and child health, family planning, and prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in rural and urban areas. These programs aim to improve public health and provide students with experience in community nursing.

  • Research Projects:

  • The department encourages students to undertake research projects on various topics related to obstetrics and gynecology, such as maternal morbidity and mortality, contraceptive use, and breastfeeding practices. These projects contribute to academic growth and improve healthcare practices.

  • Simulation-Based Learning:

  • The department utilizes simulation labs to provide students with a realistic, risk-free environment to practice essential skills such as neonatal resuscitation, managing obstetric emergencies, and performing gynecological examinations.
