The Department of Mental Health Nursing is dedicated to addressing the mental health needs of individuals through a collaborative approach involving families, significant others, and the community. The department emphasizes the importance of interpersonal processes, incorporating a concept of caring and a commitment to the professional development of students in the field of mental health nursing. It provides comprehensive education, training, and research opportunities in mental health and psychiatric care, aiming to equip nursing students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required for delivering holistic care to individuals with mental health disorders. Additionally, the department is actively involved in research to advance the field, focusing on emerging mental health issues and the development of innovative interventions. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, the Department of Mental Health Nursing collaborates with other healthcare professionals to enhance mental health awareness, advocate for clients, and ensure quality care for individuals and their families.

Our vision is to bring positive mental health among people by reducing the gravity of distress and enhance their coping mechanism, so that they are able to live a happy and stress-free life.
MISSION
The mission of mental health nursing is to reduce the health burden caused by mental illness and to increase productivity in society. Department of mental health nursing is committed to provide excellent nursing care to assist the individual to achieve optimum health by the art of the therapeutic use of self, the sciences of nursing, psychology and biology to deliver client centred care in mental health setting, schools and communities.
OBJECTIVES
- To educate nursing students in mental health and psychiatric care with a focus on practical skills and theoretical knowledge.
- To train students to provide holistic and compassionate care to individuals with mental health disorders.
- To engage in research activities that address emerging mental health issues and develop new, effective care strategies.
- To work with families, communities, and other healthcare professionals to improve mental health care and advocacy.
- To support the continuous professional development and growth of students in the field of mental health nursing.
- To promote awareness and understanding of mental health within the community and among healthcare providers.
MAJOR ACTIVITIES
- Provide hands-on training in psychiatric settings, including hospitals, community mental health centres, and rehabilitation facilities, to help students gain practical experience in patient care.
- Engage in research projects related to mental health issues, exploring innovative care strategies and evidence-based practices.
- Provide counselling sessions and support for students to help them manage psychosocial and academic stress, as well as other challenging events.
- Organize workshops, seminars, and conferences on mental health topics to enhance knowledge, share best practices, and encourage continuous learning.
- Organize and celebrate health days to raise awareness about mental health issues, promote well-being, and engage the community in health-related activities and education.
- Conduct awareness programs and outreach activities to educate the public about mental health issues and available resources.
- Collaborate with other departments, healthcare professionals, and organizations to provide comprehensive mental health services and support.
- Conduct specialized training and skill development programs for students and staff on therapeutic communication, Stress Management, Distress tolerance, emotional Regulation and other key areas in psychiatric nursing.

Multi-Disciplinary Behavior Intervention Unit (MDBI)

The centre was started in November 2005; it’s an independent unit where with the nurse’s lead the psychological needs of the clients are met. The nurses who have specially been trained in the field have attained expertise in identifying psychiatric and psychological problems and also providing patients with best suitable Therapeutic Regimen. Till now about 5640 cases have taken benefit out of the services provided by the Centre.
The nurses have attained expertise in identifying psychiatric and psychological problems, and providing patients with best suitable therapeutic regimen. It is one of the unique kind of clinic in Madhya Pradesh where nurses are actively participating as psychiatric team members. Various consultants refer patients. Patients generally referred here are suffering from depression, anxiety, panic, obsessive compulsive disorder, substance abuse, Intellectual disability, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, behavioural disorder, conversion disorder, hypochondriasis, post- traumatic stress disorder, and scholastic backward performance etc.
These patients are given guidance and counselling according to their problems and different therapeutic treatment such as behaviour Modification strategies, individual therapy, marital counselling, family therapy, exposure and response prevention therapy, Jacobson’s relaxation, parental training, supportive therapy, coping skills training, cognitive therapy, , and anger management.
OBJECTIVES OF THE CENTRE
- To train the B.Sc., Post Basic B.Sc. and M.Sc. students regarding identification and management of mental disorders.
- To render therapeutic services to the patients suffering from psychiatric illness including children, adolescents, adults and geriatric population with comprehensive treatment, counselling and specialized psychotherapies.
- To provide outreach services to community at large through camps.
- To offer liaison services.
